1961 rhd deluxe, owned by a guy called Celery, bought
in 1998, was standard at the time with a camper conversion and incorrect
rear lights.
At present it's painted red and white, slammed to
the floor with adjusters at the front and a straight axle kit at the rear.
The wheels are standard 14in steels bus wheels.

Now arrow silver over cyber green with some other
very nice custom bits on it thanks to Sean at Sunnybuses in Runcorn who
I just aquired it from, he tells me he bought it from the girl in
Liverpool as his own bus but has now decided to build himself a muscle
crew cab so sold the 15 window to me. The bus is actually a 1961 delux
as well not a '63 and the registration has also been changed. I hope to
get the bus finished for Stanford hall next year.

M plate indicates it
was manufactured in Sept 1961. The original colour being Sealing Wax Red
/ Beige Grey , but at some point it has been re-sprayed Bordeaux Red /
Cream. The bus is originally from El Paso in Texas and I have the
Federal title with the bus. It has never been
welded and there is no rust , but after forty one years in the desert it
has several dents , so it will be less of the welding and more of the
panel beating in its restoration ! This is starting in a couple of weeks
( body work first ).

1961 RHD 23 window samba,

1961 15 window RHD deluxe
My name is Gavin Whitcher, I live in North Lincolnshire.
I bought the 15 window in February from Owen Warlow.
He had apparently had it a 'long time' with 'not much interest'. He said
it was a Swedish import and that it had supposedly been stood since 1969.
There is some evidence to support this - on the near-side
quarter-light there was a Swedish (?tax) sticker dated 1967 and when we
removed the camping interior we found a Swedish comic, dated 1969, lodged
behind. It had a home-made camping interior, that has now been removed.
The chassis, floor, sills, wheel arches, corners,
etc, etc have all been repaired, with new panel work added where needed
but as much original metal retained as possible. I am going to fit IRS
kit, '68 front beam with discs and a bigger engine and return it to its
original microbus layout.
I plan to spray it red and white and trim with TMI
upholstery.
The Chassis number is 523988. |

1961 RHD deluxe, owned by Anthony (chewie)
Alderman, this bus is stunning, the amount of work that Anthony has done on
this bus is mind boggling! I went to see the samba when it was in London
at Charlie Higates and it was a scary sight, you could hardly call it a
rolling shell. what is even more amazing is the time that Anthony has taken
to do the resto (properly) just over a year!! there are so many things on
this bus that I wouldn't know were to start, so I wont, I'll just get some
more pictures of it! |

ASJ944 - 1961 rhd deluxe, imported from
Norway, owned by Wayne Tyas of Volks Heaven, this bus is very unique, it's
a pre 1963 with factory loading doors on both sides! Wayne has had
the bus for a few years now and I think just about everyone on the VW
scene must have seen it. The colour scheme is interesting, two tones of
pink!! Wayne refers to his bus as "the prawn". The bus has been
IRS'ed and lowered and has a hot 1835 cc motor, awesome!!
Update 01 AUG 2001
This bus is now running a 2.1 |
