This 1960 is now owned by Rob Godfrey, he has started to get the samba sorted. Basically, the motor is now a 1600 with a few dress up bits, but some 36 Dells will soon find their way on to it. The 3 bench seats are re-covered in black and the door cards have yet to go on. As you can see, it's been dropped down quite a bit with IRS conversion etc. Also you can see from the new pic it's running on South African Sprint stars. Note that unusual cargo door side steep, nice. This van has managed to retain those one year only hinge covers which stop anything catching on them (Theoretically, front to hinges on the loading doors). I wonder how long Rob will be run this bus with a stinger tail pipe, the noise is almost unbearable, especially on long journeys!!
WWV 80 -1960 RHD samba, recently purchased by Andy Glacier (July'ish 2001). Picture taken at Vanfeast 2001. I first saw this bus in 1995, I was on my way to Guilford on the A3 when I caught up with it, I followed it for a while and eventually the owned pulled in to a road of lock up garages, I got out  and strolled up to the driver, he was an elderly gentleman and looked a little concerned, until I told him who I was, at this point he seemed to breath a sigh of relief and started telling me about some of the history of the deluxe. Amazingly he had owned this van from new and it had been the only vehicle he had ever owned!!  Respect!
1960/1 was the only year a bus came with the small round red rear lights and no semaphores, similar to American spec, very nice indeed, the interior is amazing, early Devon's are in a league of there own (as far as I'm concerned), especially with that round cupboard by the loading doors and that mad little water tank above the cool box. I will try and keep you up to date with the progress of it's restoration, knowing Andy it will be a cracker.
